May is a great time for adults to visit Disney World. Most kids are in school (at least until Memorial Day). Plus, EPCOT’s Flower and Garden Festival takes place all month long so there’s plenty of food, drinks and live music to enjoy.
On the downside, it can be hot, but the oppressive humidity and storms in June, July and August haven’t arrived yet. So enjoy the ideal pool weather or plan for air conditioning in the afternoon to be more comfortable.
To start planning your trip. here’s everything you need to know about visiting Disney World in May.
May Events and Holidays
Memorial Day is the major holiday in May, but you can avoid crowds by arriving a few days before the holiday weekend starts and leave when it ends. It’s also common for multiple sport competitions to take place on Disney World property this month. Check the ESPN Wide World of Sports calendar to view dates (and plan your trip around these events).
Additionally, Star Wars Day is May 4. It’s a fun time to visit Hollywood Studios if you’re a fan of the movies, otherwise go to this park on a different day (it will be crowded).
The last thing to know that in 2025, a new theme park is opening near Disney World on May 22 (Universal Epic Universe). This may increase or possibly decrease Disney World crowds on and around Memorial Day weekend.

Crowds
May is generally a good time to visit Disney World for manageable crowds. In 2025, the theme parks might be busier in the first half of the month due to cheerleading competitions, making the middle of May the best time to visit. A Memorial Day weekend trip also works. Just arrive on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday before the holiday and consider departing on Sunday or Monday.
May Weather
A Disney World trip in May is usually hot, but humidity levels are relatively low compared to other months. High temperatures are in the 80s and 90s (visit earlier in the month for cooler weather). Since the rainy season doesn’t start until June, it’s mostly sunny days. Check the forecast before your trip to see if you need to bring a poncho or umbrella (which is also helpful for shade).
What to Wear
Wear cool clothes, ideally with breathable or moisture-wicking fabric. This includes most athletic clothing. UV or SPF shirts are also great options and can reflect some of the heat. Keep in mind that you’ll likely wear two outfits most days. You’ll get sweaty from walking around the theme parks or lounging at the pool and will eagerly look forward to a cool shower before dinner.
Also, don’t forget to wear a hat and have multiple pairs of comfortable walking shoes. Walking/hiking sandals that can get wet are also great for water rides or the rare rainy day.
Planning Tips
- If you want to visit over Memorial Day weekend, arrive a few days before the weekend starts for fewer crowds.
- Consider booking a hotel or resort with a nice pool as you’ll likely want to cool off in one.
- If you book a stay at an official Disney resort, you can visit a Disney water park for free on your arrival day (valid in 2025).
- Bring a reusable water bottle with you everywhere to stay hydrated. There are many places to refill your bottle, including near some restrooms and in quick service restaurants. You can also get free cups of water in the theme parks.
- Consider arriving at the parks at least 30 minutes before they open and going back to your hotel or resort in the afternoon. You’ll have shorter ride wait times in the morning and can dodge the hottest part of the day by being inside or in a pool.
- After Hour events are worthwhile for shorter wait times and cooler weather. It can replace a single park ticket. We recommend relaxing at your resort or visiting Disney Springs in the first half of the day before going to the event.
- Look for water features or rides in the theme parks where you can get wet (and cool down) if it is a hot day. This includes Journey of Water in EPCOT, Kali River Rapids in Animal Kingdom and Casey Jr. Splash ‘N’ Soak Station in Magic Kingdom.
