For some adults, Disney World is all about the shows and themed experiences. For others, it’s all about the rides. View the list below for the ones you don’t want to miss. For the shortest wait times, purchase tickets to an After Hours event, take advantage of extended evening hours or plan to be at the theme parks at least 30 minutes before early entry time. Wait times also tend to drop during firework shows, parades and just before the parks close.
1. Avatar: Flight of Passage
Head to Animal Kingdom for an incredible flight on the back of banshee. You’ll soar and dive through world of Pandora in 3D, and sensory special effects make the experience feel even more real. To reduce your time in line, plan to ride Flight of Passage just before the park closes or take advantage of the early entry for Disney resort and select hotel guests. However, if you’re prone to motion sickness, you may want to pass on this ride.
2. Expedition Everest
One of the most thrilling roller coasters in Disney World, Expedition Everest takes you into snow-covered mountains where you’ll dodge the yeti monster and fly backwards in the dark at high speeds. There is a single rider line available at this Animal Kingdom attraction, which can shorten wait times. Another perk is the panoramic views of the surrounding area from the top of the coaster.
3. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind debuted in EPCOT in May 2022 and it’s been a top ride at Disney World since then. The ride queue sets up the story line for the indoor roller coaster, which launches backwards to one of several songs from the 70s or 80s. It’s an exhilarating few minutes full of audio and video. You’ll want to ride again and again, especially to experience it with a different song.
4. Soarin’ Around the World
In EPCOT’s Land Pavilion, Soarin‘ gives you the experience of flying through different landscapes on Earth. It’s relaxing, beautiful and all indoors — perfect for a rainy day or when it’s really hot (or cold) outside. Ask to be seated in row one in Concourse B for the best views. For more amazing scenery, you can watch Awesome Planet, a 10-minute film, in the same building.
5. Stars Wars: Rise of the Resistance
Star Wars fans and anyone who wants to feel like they’ve stepped into a movie should ride Hollywood Studio’s Rise of the Resistance. You’ll go on a special mission and dodge attacks from the First Order on this immersive 18-minute ride. It’s a great option if you aren’t into roller coasters, but want to experience Disney’s imagineering at its best.
6. Slinky Dog Dash
It may look like a kiddie coaster, but Slinky Dog Dash in Hollywood Studios is fast, smooth and super fun. You’ll fly around curves, wind up and spring forward, and have views of the entire park while on the ride. It’s extra fun at night with the colored lights. Try getting in line first thing in the morning or just before the park closes for the shortest wait times.
7. Tower of Terror
If you have ever wondered what it’s like to fall in an elevator, be sure to ride Tower of Terror. The outside and inside ride queue at the “Hollywood Tower Hotel” is full of interesting details and vintage decor, which helps pass the time. But if you are afraid of heights, you’ll definitely want to skip this ride. Note that there are also multiple “elevators” to choose from so you can have a variety of views from the top.
8. Haunted Mansion
Haunted Mansion is one of Magic Kingdom’s opening day rides. It’s a timeless classic with spooky details, eerie moments and puns provided by your ghost host. With so much to see, you’ll notice something new each time you ride. You’ll also appreciate the air conditioning on hot days. We highly recommend riding at night or during a thunderstorm for extra ambience.
9. Space Mountain
The oldest roller coaster at Walt Disney World, Space Mountain in Magic Kingdom is technically two indoor roller coasters. Alpha is on the left (we like this side better) and Omega is on the right. The ride is completely in the dark to mimic travel through space and there are many twists, turns and drops. Due to its age, the ride is a bit rough. It’s not recommended if you are pregnant or have neck or back problems. Ask to be seated in the front of the coaster for a smoother ride.
10. TRON Lightcycle / Run
The newest roller coaster at Magic Kingdom, TRON opened in 2023 and is the most thrilling ride in the theme park (especially at night). You’ll reach speeds of almost 60 mph as you as you straddle your seat, similar to riding a motorcycle. Because of this, it may be an uncomfortable ride for some people and the restraints may not work if you are a certain weight or height (but there are a limited number of upright seats available with a lap bar).
