There are only three Disney World resort hotels that have direct access to the monorail: the Contemporary, Polynesian and Grand Floridian. All are expensive deluxe resorts with bedrooms, suites and villas, and part of the price includes easy access to Magic Kingdom. Here are the pros and cons of each if you’re trying to decide where to stay.
Contemporary Resort

The Contemporary opened at the same time as Magic Kingdom in 1971, so the nostalgia is high at this resort. The monorail actually travels through the building, which creates a lively atmosphere. One special feature is a large mural on the 4th floor that was created by Mary Blair, who worked on the It’s a Small World ride.
Pros
- The Contemporary is the closest resort to Magic Kingdom. Walking time is only 10 minutes.
- Chef Mickey’s has character dining.
- Fantastic restaurants, including the rooftop California Grill and Steakhouse 71.
- Great firework views from California Grill and the fourth floor observation deck.
- There is a fitness center and two swimming pools; one that overlooks Bay Lake.
- There’s a dock with boat rentals and boat transportation to Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness.
Cons
- The Contemporary ironically feels dated in some areas.
- The pools are a little underwhelming.
- It’s a convention hotel, and and it really feels that way in some areas.
- Magic Kingdom is the last stop on the monorail if you board it at this resort (you can walk there faster).
- Room décor is based on the “Incredibles” movies, which could be a con if you don’t like this theming.
- The bus pickup zone is in a compact area near the lobby and can get crowded.

Polynesian Resort

Disney’s Polynesian Resort also opened in October 1971 and is tied with the Contemporary as the oldest resort on property. It’s a relaxing place to stay with beautiful landscaping, tiki torches, island music, beaches and tropical drinks. You can also pick up a free lei every day in the lobby.
Pros
- You can get on a boat to reach Magic Kingdom.
- There are two pools, one with a volcano water slide.
- You can buy dole whip here (including with alcohol).
- There’s a beach with views of Cinderella’s castle and fireworks.
- You really feel like you’re on vacation with the tropical theming.
- Decent food, including sushi and all-you-can-eat dining at ‘Ohana.
- Multiple bars inside and outside, including the fun-themed Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto, Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace (which has live music) and Tambu Lounge.
- You can walk to the Ticket and Transportation Center for quick access to the EPCOT monorail. It’s especially a short walk if you’re staying in the Moorea or Pogo Pogo buildings.
Cons
- Many people visit the Polynesian who aren’t staying there.
- You’ll need to make reservations early as this is a popular resort.
- No gym or spa, but you can use the one at the Grand Floridian.
- Some of the rooms are far away from the lobby and buses, plus you’ll need to walk outside to reach your room and transportation, which is a downer during rain showers, hot days and cold weather.

Grand Floridian

The Grand Floridian Resort is the most regal and formal out of all the monorail resorts. The theme is 1900s Victorian era and the ornate lobby features a regularly scheduled piano player and a huge gingerbread house during the holidays. The one thing that isn’t old-fashioned is the food; you can choose from multiple signature restaurants here.
Pros:
- It’s a 15-20 minute walk to the Magic Kingdom.
- Magic Kingdom is the first stop on the monorail.
- There is a fitness center and spa.
- There are two large pools. One has a water slide and waterfalls.
- There are beaches and a marina where you can rent boats.
- The Grand Floridan Resort has the best restaurants out of all the monorail hotels, including the highest-rated restaurant on property, Victoria and Albert’s. Narcoossee’s, Citricos and Grand Floridian Cafe also have fantastic food.
- Gasparilla Island Grill, the quick service restaurant, has great mac and cheese (we also like the breakfast croissant).
- In addition to restaurants, there is a tea room and a Beauty and the Beast themed lounge, the Enchanted Rose.
- There’s boat transportation to Magic Kingdom, but you’ll make a stop at the Polynesian Resort first. However, when departing Magic Kingdom, you’ll get dropped off first.
Cons:
- There aren’t any covered walkways between the many buildings, which isn’t ideal when it rains.
- It’s the last stop on the monorail when you are departing from Magic Kingdom (the boat transportation is usually faster).
- Some people don’t like the Victorian era decor. If you prefer more modern-looking rooms, book a stay at a different resort.
- The buses to Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and Disney Springs stop at the Polynesian first, so they may be full or almost full when they arrive at the Grand Floridian during peak travel times.
